What does this story about BG3 mods have to do with AI?

Gaming has been showing us what the future of entertainment will look like for decades. And that future is driven by fans as creators, serviced by brand IP, and made possible by artificial intelligence.

Nearly 30 years ago, a groundbreaking game called Ultima Online was released. Many thought it was too ambitious, but its effect on the future of entertainment experiences was profound. It not only unlocked entirely new business models for games, it also introduced concepts like player-driven economies, emergent gameplay, persistent worlds, live development and community events.

Today, wildly popular sandbox games like Fortnite and Roblox, along with immersive open-world titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur's Gate 3, are pushing these concepts to new levels.

Outside of gaming, the shift to a UGC-dominant future is clear with the explosive success of TikTok and YouTube. But soon, even TikTok will face challenges as AI takes hold and fans unlock the full potential of what this transformational technology can really do.

The hard-lines that have traditionally separated interactive and passive experiences are vanishing. And soon — as adoption of immersive formats like AR & VR accelerates (which it will) — the screens and walled gardens that content typically exists within, will also evaporate.

AI is supercharging the ability for brands and entertainment companies to extend the reach of their IP, dramatically enhance engagement, and seamlessly connect audience experiences across formats.

But to stay competitive, companies must move quickly, because the fans, creators, and technology aren't going to wait around.
